Position Summary

The IV Sterile Compounding Supervisor Pharmacist is responsible for overseeing the preparation and dispensing of sterile compounded medications, ensuring compliance with USP 797/800 standards, safety regulations, and ECU Health Medical Center policies. The role includes managing pharmacy personnel, optimizing sterile compounding workflows, ensuring quality assurance, and driving continuous process improvements to maintain safe and efficient operations.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership:
Supervise daily operations of sterile compounding areas, including IV admixtures, hazardous drug preparation, and other compounded sterile preparations (CSPs).
Oversee compounding processes to ensure compliance with USP 797, USP 800, and state/federal pharmacy regulations.
Maintain optimal workflows to achieve timely preparation and delivery of CSPs.
Quality Assurance & Compliance:
Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and SOPs related to sterile compounding and hazardous drug handling.
Ensure environmental monitoring, pressure, humidity, temperature checks, and BUD (Beyond Use Dating) are conducted according to guidelines.
Perform staff training and competency assessments in sterile compounding practices.
Lead the team in preparation for regulatory inspections and address any identified gaps or compliance issues.
Personnel Management:
Directly supervise pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff working in sterile compounding areas.
Provide coaching, training, and performance evaluations for the team.
Schedule and maintain adequate staffing coverage to meet operational needs.
Inventory & Resource Management:
Oversee inventory of sterile compounding supplies, IV fluids, and hazardous drugs to minimize waste and ensure availability.
Collaborate with the procurement team for purchasing and inventory optimization.
Process Improvement & Technology Integration:
Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce errors, and optimize workflows.
Integrate and oversee technology tools such as IV workflow management systems, automated compounders, and camera verification technologies.
Monitor and report on sterile compounding KPIs, including turnaround times, medication errors, and compliance metrics.
Professional Development & Team Collaboration:
Stay current on sterile compounding best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies.
Act as a resource for pharmacy, nursing, and physician teams on sterile product preparation and handling.
Provide educational opportunities to staff on sterile compounding safety and compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm).

Licensure: Current and active NCBOP pharmacist license in good standing.

Experience:

Minimum 1-3 years of experience in sterile compounding or IV admixture pharmacy operations.

Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

Certifications: Certification in Sterile Compounding (e.g., BCSCP or other recognized credential) preferred.
